Some people think that a STEM degree will stand out more than anything, while other people believe humanities degrees to be superior. However, data shows that STEM degrees are currently topping job market lists and will continue to do so through 2021. This post addresses future projections of these top fields and provides more insight into the best undergraduate degrees of tomorrow.

Most common fields of study for undergraduates

The five most common fields of study for undergraduates are business, health professions, social sciences and history, education, and English language and literature. Of these fields of study, the top three expected to have the most growth from 2016 to 2021 are nursing at 19%, engineering technologies at 13%, and biological sciences at 12%.

The common belief that STEM subjects are the future of this nation’s economy is true. Data shows that many top jobs in these fields are currently available, positions which are expected to have the highest growth by 2021. The five best undergraduate degrees for finding a job are computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, statistics, and computer and information sciences.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 21 million jobs will be added to America’s workforce between 2016 and 2026, accounting for 11% of job growth in the country. However, not all industries will show equal contributions to this growth. The need for healthcare professionals to support an aging baby boomer generation is often cited as the most important factor in job growth over these 10 years, where jobs in healthcare are expected to make up nearly a quarter of all new jobs created.

What about technology? In an article from Fast Company, author Mark Wilson notes that some form of “computer literacy” will be increasingly important for future workers who want to stay competitive in the job market. However, it’s important to understand that this does not simply mean learning how to use a computer or learning how to code, but rather knowing how technology can be used as an effective problem-solving tool for solving business problems.

This degree trains students in technology-related fields with a focus on serving others. Some of the areas that are covered include IT project management & computer support specialist, computer science & software engineering, business data analytics & information systems management, web design & programming, multimedia & interactive media design.

What types of jobs can I expect to have upon graduation? Here are a few examples from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics:

In 2016, 20% of all people employed as computer and information research scientists were self-employed.Median pay in 2016 for computer and information research scientists was $102,220 annually.

In 2016, 1% of all people employed as computer science professors were self-employed.

Median pay in 2016 for computer science professors was $115,820 annually.

In 2016, 27% of all people employed as web developers were self-employed.

Median pay in 2016 for web developers was $65,400 annually.

One of the best undergraduate courses in 2021: The Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics, because it has a high employment rate and job security. It is good for people who want to make their own family happier! One of the most promising bachelor’s degrees in 2021: The Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management. There will be many positions available because of the growing sports industry.
